The Window of Tolerance

The Window of Tolerance is a term coined by Dr. Dan Siegel to describe the optimal zone of arousal where we can effectively manage and process our emotions. When we are within this window, we are able to respond to life's challenges with flexibility and resilience, remaining grounded and present even during difficult moments.

A peaceful and abstract therapeutic visual

When we experience stress or trauma, we may find ourselves pushed outside this window into states of hyper-arousal (fight/flight) or hypo-arousal (freeze/shut down). Understanding these states is the first step toward reclaiming your emotional balance. In hyper-arousal, you might feel anxious, overwhelmed, or angry. In hypo-arousal, you may feel numb, disconnected, or exhausted.

Counselling provides a safe space to explore your unique window. Together, we work to expand this zone of tolerance, helping you develop the awareness and tools needed to stay regulated. By recognizing the early signs of arousal shifts, you can learn to gently bring yourself back to a state of calm and connection.
